"Arising" - Abstract Fauvist - Style of Rothko in Acrylic on Paper by Joy Willow

circa 2000

About the Item

"Arising" - Abstract Fauvist - Style of Rothko in Acrylic on Paper Abstract painting depicting a faint yellow watercolor background with different hues of yellow along the borders, merging into the middle while blending with tones of orange and white. Orange takes over the center bottom, while white transcends underneath and across. We can see subtle brown mixed into the white in the bottom left corner. Signed "J. Willow" lower right Presented in a rustic light wood frame. Frame: 21.5"H x 17.5"W Image: 14.5"H x 11"W Image with mat: 20"H x 16"W Joy Willow (American, b. 1944 -) was born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania where she pursued music, literature, and private art teachings at a young age. Joy’s art education includes a lengthy period of study with mentors Judith Hale of Mendocino, CA and Judy Sohigian of Taos, NM, where she developed her "abstract naturalist" style, which combines the love of organic line and texture with images inspired from nature. Working on canvas, panel and on print-making paper, she aims to create a feeling of spontaneity and space while implying an internal landscape. Her panels afford a build-up of textures that suggest earth and rock forms. Her works on paper often begin with linear expressive gestures which are then "processed" in a way that adds and subtracts as the painting reveals itself. Joys work has been exhibited in galleries and private collections throughout Northern California, including Sonoma and Marin counties, San Francisco, Sacramento, Cambria, Lake Tahoe and the Motherlode area where her work has been shown in Sonora's former Ventana Gallery and Murphy's Handmade Gallery. Joy has been a member of numerous art associations including TCA and the Motherlode Art Association and a member of the board for Sonora Art Trails.
