Provenance: The family of A. E. Halliwell
Little is known about the artist other than the fact that he studied under the celebrated artist A. E. Halliwell. Halliwell is known to have collected a number of his students' paintings and the fact that this painting was in Halliwell's collection demonstrates that Halliwell thought highly of it. This is a striking painting, featuring a colourful yellow central column with strands of pink and blue colours branching out from it. The geometric shapes and patterns spread across this composition call to mind the textile designs of the famous 20th-century German artist Annie Albers, situating this work within a broader corpus of artistic production at the time.
