About the Item
A substantial, Amrican school o,il abstract comprising adjacent and superimposed, organic shapes in Prussian blue, vermilion, and olive contrasted against a slate and lavender ground.
Signed lower right, 'K. Martin S.', painted circa 1965 and accompanied by old exhibition label.
Born and educated in Denver, Colorado, Kenneth Martin Snodgrass was a painter, portraitist, caricaturist, author and theater director. After completing time in the military, Snodgrass attended the University of Denver and, subsequently, Mexico City College (1959). After receiving his BA and MFA, Snodgrass traveled extensively in the United States before moving to Europe. An active artist, Snodgrass visited Amsterdam, Spain, Munich, Heidelberg and Stuttgart, where his first show, at the Galerie Lutz (1964), was well received. Further time in Europe found the artist working as a caricaturist for the satirical journal ”Simplissimus” and teaching art to NATO soldiers, as well as involving himself in theatre. While living in Evreux, he directed plays by Eugène Ionesco, Murray Schisgal and John Carlino and, subsequently, created his own theater company. In 1973, Snodgrass made frequent trips between France and the United States after an invitation from the University of Ottawa, Kansas to become an artist in residence. Over the course of a long career, Kenneth Snodgrass exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards.
