About

"Avatar" is both dramatic and powerful in its 3-dimensional construction. The painted surface has the appearance of containing Native American symbolism. The piece is comprised of oil on a stretched canvas over a custom wood frame. Larry Butcher is a retired professor emeritus of art from Delta College where he taught painting and drawing for 39 years. He holds BS and MA degrees from Central Michigan University and post-graduate work from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Artis Lane (the first African-American artist to have her sculpture, "Sojourner Truth," commissioned for the Emancipation Hall in the Capital Visitor Center in Washington DC), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), Morris Brose (Bronze Sculptures) and Herb Babcock (known for his blown glass.) Butcher has exhibited his paintings, drawings and mixed media work since 1965. He has had 21 one-man shows and is in the collection of the Saginaw Art Museum, Flint Institute of Arts, Alden B. Dow Center for Art and Design, Dennos Museum Center as well as over 400 private and public collections. Larry Butcher's art relates to the evidence of living and the passing of time. Many of the themes in Butcher's work honor the fragile impermanence of life. The work, then, becomes another kind of journey for Butcher. Occasionally, a work in progress can produce elements that forewarn of a journey not yet taken. Such is the relationship between several of Butcher’s pieces and the journey he and his family embarked on in 2001. Within a short time, three members of his family were diagnosed with cancer – his mother, his father, then, Butcher. After surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Butcher recovered and is, as far as he knows, cancer-free. He continues to work daily in his studio. "There is an edge, an element of technology where pathos meets pity," Butcher explained. "In the academic arena, I realize much of our budget is eaten up in technology, the love of technology, what I call academic heroin. It’s like we’ll do anything to make sure we have the best. It sacrifices being able to hire teachers and staff, things that are more practical. We just sell it out for technology because we’re so in love with it."
