About the Item

Larry Zox (1936-2006) American, Des Moines, IA - Colchester ,CT “Untitled” 1981 Acrylic on canvas 50 3⁄4 x 88 3⁄4 in. unframed 51 x 89 in. framed Artist stamp, signed L. Zox, 1981, 50 1⁄2 x 88 5⁄8 Acrylic/canvas, 81-055 on reverse on stretcher, signed 550-18 on reverse on canvas Larry Zox was an Important figure in the era following the Abstract Expressionists, and became known as a leading figure in the Color Field and Lyrical Abstractionist movements. He was born in Iowa, and went on to attend Oklahoma University and Drake University. He studied under George Grosz for a part of his career before moving on to create unique and imperative works that characterized him as a leading visionary of the 20th century. This painting by Zox is unique in that it does not exemplify many of the typical motifs and elements Zox prioritizes in his work. While he usually focuses on geometry, clean lines, and angles in his work, this untitled piece exhibits an almost Frankenthaler-like quality of linework and composition. The wisps of red color that overlay the beige background seem to glow, with the edges of these red shapes being unsure and fragile. The background holds within it a multitude of variation, with some shapes creeping out of the right side of the canvas, helping frame the foregrounded red shapes. The interplay of color and composition makes it so that no part of the canvas isn’t busy and teeming with energy.
