French artist L'Atlas, born Jules Dedet Granel in 1978, fuses his passion for language and writing with the pictorial arts. He studied calligraphy in different countries and cultures, becoming particularly interested in creating a universal graphic language: a balance between form and letter, act and intent; a game with endless variations, drawing near and diverging from optical art and the abstract and geometric art movements. L'Atlas systematically renews his approach and expression of the letter and the line, of the codified rhythm of writing, searching for the limits of legibility and methodically leading his work towards abstraction and minimalism. He considers all form as letter and all letter as form, which has led him to work with urban planners to give a third dimension to his art and reinvent public spaces, thus restoring meaning to the architectural dimension of his ideas. In the 90s, he took radical action in the public sphere and made a name for himself in the graffiti world; as of 2000, he began exhibiting his works in contemporary urban art galleries. A renowned street artist, L'Atlas is known for his painted facades and monumental performances carried out directly on the ground on historical sites in partnership with their cities, such as Paris and Toulouse. He has collaborated with major brands such as Perrier and the designer Agnès B., one of his most loyal collectors.
