About the Item

1940s Abstract painting on paper by British-American modernist Madge Knight. This work is a quintessential example of the artist's work from the time period. A time when Madge and her American modernist husband Charles Howard were creating similar simplistic and almost surrealistic abstract paintings. This work comes from the collection of a prominent San Francisco Bay Area figure. The forward thinking artist and collector were likely friends when the work was created. The original frame and matting have been replaced with similar contemporary framing and acid free matting to better preserve the work. The glass was also replaced with UV plexiglass for safe keeping and shipping. About the artist : Madge Knight (United Kingdom/California/Italy 1895-1974) was a British modernist artist who married American modernist Charles Boardman Howard in the 1930s. Charles Howard was a member of the influential avant-garde family of Howards that left a lasting impression on the San Francisco Bay Area. The two modernist, Charles and Madge lived in London until the advent of WWII, inn 1940 the two moved to the US, staying in the San Francisco Bay area, studying and sharing ideas with the Howard family and the rest of the bay area's progressives. After the war Madge and Charles returned to Europe, but continued to travel frequently between the US and Europe, sharing ideas and approaches to modern art in both regions. Dated 1947 Gouache on paperboard. Measures 13.5″ by 16.5″ sight size, and 21.5″ by 24″ by 1.25″ overall including framing. Notes: Signed and dated lower left and housed in a contemporary frame.
