Makoto Fujimura
Charis

About

mineral pigment and gold leaf, two panels Fujimura spent his formative years in the United States. However, he studied traditional Japanese in a doctorate program for several years in Tokyo, Japan. His bicultural arts education led to his style towards a fusion of fine art and abstract expressionism together with the Japanese art of Nihonga, paintings made with traditional Japanese conventions, techniques, and materials. The artist began using gold in the leaf form, as well as the powder form very early on in his studies of Nihonga. He was taught as a student to always use the best materials in order to truly understand the ancient craft. In Charis over one thousand sheets of Japanese gold foils in multiple layers were used over mineral pigment gestures that move across the surface. Fujimura’s interest in abstraction lies in the satiation of reality, the sublime. In that search, he creates a space that is both flat and deep; the foil creates space due to its translucency, but also remains flat due to its reflective properties. In Fujimura’s work, gold takes on the properties and presence of intense light, one cannot help but experience that sense of cosmic space when looking at his compositions. His work is included in the public collections of the Contemporary Museum of Tokyo, Tokyo Museum of Modern Art, Cincinnati Museum of Art, St. Louis Art Museu, and Nerima Art Museum.
