About the Item
Marcia Wise’s “Ultraterrena” is a 24 x 18 inch energetic abstract oil painting on canvas pairing calm blues and magentas with warm oranges and yellows. “Ultraterrena” is a part of her most recent work in her exploration into more abstraction. This painting consists of a colorists use of complements, using the calming blues and magentas against the warmer oranges and yellows. Here we can trace Wise’s journey from previous work in her forms and structures while also witnessing more use of mark-making as if in the energetics of a dance. We feel alive and fully engaged as the eye dances along on the journey. Wise also uses a darker combination of colors to mimic black, and the effect surprises with more richness. “Ultraterrena is an Italian word meaning “other worldly” or “afterlife,” which might indicate other experiences of this particular artist as well as her emotional responses to her yearly painting trips to Italy. This painting is unframed with clean, white edges and signed on the front by the artist.
