About the Item
48"x60" oil and graphite on canvas (signed on reverse).
This large scale oil painting by Mark Masyga created with a stunning linear abstract composition. A neutral cool grey ground accentuates the complex and intertwined linework in grey- blue and greens, whites and browns. The full range of colors in this painting cross the spectrum from yellow, orange, reds and pinks to cooler blues, but maintains a balance in tone and color.
Masyga employs drawing techniques in his painting to create bold lines of color, which overlap and intersect. This painting has a controlled depth to the visual surface, while the warm grey background creates an endless atmosphere, in which the lines take on the feel of objects in space. Coral orange lines meet with blue and violet, while vibrant brown and navy paths are balanced against yellow and white passages. The sometimes coiled, sometimes kinked lines have a structure to them which that is rendered through the artist's intuitive relationship to color and density. Masyga's masterful knowledge and background in color field painting shows a heightened sense and use of color in this painting, which he relates to chance encounters on the canvas. These become edited and directed until a harmony and accord is achieved in the complex structure and layering of lines and boundaries of color.
Mark Masyga received his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and currently lives and works in New York. The recipient of the Edward F. Albee award, Masyga has participated in residencies in Montauk, New York, Skowhegan, Maine, and was featured in the PS 1 Studio Visit Program. Mark Masyga has exhibited extensively in New York and Nationally. He is represented by Front Room Gallery in New York.

Masyga's masterful knowledge and background in Color Field painting shows a heightened sense and use of color, which he relates to chance encounters on the canvas. 24"x30" oil, graphite on canvas, signed on reverse by the artist. This contemporary abstract painting by New York artist, Mark Masyga is visually laid out with painted lines of color intertwined and layered on top of each other. The neutral warm grey ground is activated by the multiple layers of paths of blues, beige, cream white, dark greys and near blacks, interspersed with fine curved and bent lines of light green, orange, lavender and rose pink. This is an engaging linear abstract painting with an immense visual depth of field. This painting is featured in a solo show released by the Front Room Gallery in New York, entitled, "Charitable Deceptions".
In this new body of work, the title “Charitable Deceptions,” refers to a passage written by Gabriel García Márquez in which, “…memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good.” Mark Masyga ruminates on this concept through his process of addition and subtraction in his compositional constructions. The linear abstract paintings in this exhibition chronicle a passage of time as explored through the artist’s application...
