About the Item

Signed lower right, 'M.S. Bremer' for Marlene Bremer (German-American, 1937-2018); additionally titled, verso, 'Spring Series 96 No. 3', signed and painted circa 1996. Displayed in an original, painted black wood strip frame. Framed dimensions: 17 x 12 inches Marlene Bremer was born and educated in Germany. She continued her formal education in the United States she was awarded a Master of Arts degree as well as a Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts from New York University. Marlene’s paintings and sculptures reflect her lifelong love of beauty expressed in nature and the environment and executed in an expressionist interaction of vibrant colors and vivid, alla prima, brushwork. Over the course of a long career, Marlene Bremer exhibited internationally with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards including from the National Association of Women Artists, the Salute to Women in the Arts, the New Jersey Bicentennial Arts and Crafts Show, and the Institute Audio Visual, Paris, France, among others. In addition to membership of the national Association of Women Artists, Bremer was a member of New York's Artist Equity, Painting & Water Color Affiliates of the Art Center of Northern New Jersey and Salute to Women in the Arts, New Milford, NJ. She taught at The School of Continuing Education, Ridgewood, NJ and at Bergen Community College, Paramus, NJ. Her works can be found in corporate and private collections in the U.S. and Europe. The red circle tempers the movement a little and brings all the strokes and wild directions into a harmony that is bursting with life. This is an extraordinarily expressive painting by Simpson. Simpson became the first African American to receive a prestigious five-year fellowship from the Charleston Scientific and Cultural Education fund and left South Carolina in 1949 for New York City after he finished high school. He attended New York University and Cooper Union while working in the frame shop of Herbert Benevy.
