Martha HoldenContemporary Colorful Abstract Painting On Handmade Paper by Martha Holden
About the Item
With its extra-large dimension and joyful composition this painting by American artist Martha Holden is a rare piece. It is a contemporary abstract that excites the bystander in a vivid and cheerful color palette. The painting is made with an ink and gouache printmaking technique applied on handmade paper. The uneven surface of the handmade paper gives the composition a dynamic feel, paired with the printmaking technique the overall experience of the painting is a space where liquescent and solid forms are harmoniously interveined.
The painting is signed ‘Holden’ in the front lower left corner. The painting carries a floating frame with acrylic glass. The framed dimensions are 157cm (H) x 106cm (W) x 4,5cm(D) / 61,8in (H) x 41,7in (W) x 1,77in (D). The condition of the painting is great with little to no signs of wear.
Artist bio:
The painting is made by American artist Martha Holden (1951- ). Trained classically at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Martha's deft brushstrokes fill canvases in her West Adams District (LA) artist studio daily. Her work references primitivist painting styles, extending Fauvism and establishing her modernist credentials. A prolific artist, her paintings have been sold through Corcoran and fine art contemporary galleries across the country and internationally.
Martha has always been fascinated by the power of color to create a visual play by association of pattern, harmony, and rhythm. Her tools are a combination of painting, printmaking, and drawing techniques, and her work is inspired by the cultures she has experienced while traveling. Her art is as visually strong and by blending traditional oil techniques with dynamic hues and contrasting color schemes to create powerful and colorful paintings in the Fauvist style.
From the powerful river Marne to quiet ponds and forests, Martha's outdoor exploration of painting with oils led to a series of stunning landscapes based on the views around Paris, France. She then moved on to drawing the human form, alternating between figurative and abstract in her work with drawing, oils, and printmaking.

Since the pandemic, this focus has become ever more apparent as her new acrylic paintings on paper demonstrate her intuitive process of reinterpreting literal subjects like leaves, flowers, birds, or bugs into vibrant worlds of layered color. She begins by drawing from life but then allows fluctuating colors, traces of the hand, and evidence of the physical medium to be introduced as the composition evolves and finds its final imprint on the surface. The spontaneity of her process welcomes the unknown, she explains: “The things that moved me first…might have become by now just a faint whispering. But I know that a story is being told, even if I don’t understand yet all the words.” About the artist: Anne Francey was born in 1956 in Grandson, Switzerland. She attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (ECBA) from 1976 to 1981, where she received a diploma of Fine Arts in painting.
