'This abstract painting is inspired by my yearning for the summer coast of Cornwall during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Rounded forms bring to mind the solid granite boulders, weathered over thousands of years, against a backdrop of cliffs, sea and sky in the summer heat. I wanted this painting to evoke bright optimism, following times of challenge and fear.' Mary Scott artist with Wychwood Art. Mary Scott comments "I have had a lifelong love of being immersed in ancient landscapes and wild places, enhanced by reading earth sciences at university which led to opportunities in my early career to study rocks and landforms both in the UK and abroad. I now enjoy using a variety of mixed media, mainly acrylic paints with inks, charcoal and pencil, to produce semi-abstract landscapes. I particularly enjoy exploring contrasts of colour and light between the ancient solid rock and landscape, and the ever-changing wild energy of sea and sky. My approach to painting is largely intuitive and spontaneous. I may start out with a sense of direction, but then investigate colour, shape and textural mark-making in an open and exploratory way through the course of building thicker and thinner layers of paint and glazes, before scraping back to discover what lies beneath. This process of revealing glimpses, half-hidden things and curious marks helps to develop contrasts between the ancient permanence of rock formations, landscapes developing through time, and the present and future possibilities of the elements above.

  • Hush, Tapestry-Like Landscape Painting, Semi-Abstract Mixed Media Artwork
    Located in Deddington, GB
“Hush” is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape, space, colour and texture in places I have visited. Some of these are specific to landscapes around my studio in Surrey, the South Downs and Devon but mostly they are a visual amalgamation of experiences, like a patchwork of memories and feelings from one or many places. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold mono-tone blocks which reflect the shadowy-shape of evergreen trees against more open hills and meadows. I see more when I’m not focused on the detail, painting intuitively with a mix of acrylics, inks, chalk and oil pastels to capture an emotive response to a place rather than the reality of a specific landscape. Brush strokes and marks are layered and carved with fluid lines that create imagined dream-like patterns. “Hush” is painted on a wood panel with muted shades of slate, moss, pebble and shell, contrasted with a bold graphic swathe of charcoal.
