About the Item
Maya Kabat’s Begin Again 5 (2025) exemplifies her bold abstract style, created with lots of oil paint on canvas (mounted to panel) using her signature drywall tools. Kabat builds rich geometric compositions by layering, scraping, and carving into paint, producing textured surfaces that echo both architecture and textile design. In this work, blocks of deep violet and cream are interrupted by luminous bands of pink, orange, lime, and green, creating a rhythmic interplay of color and form. The precise yet tactile structure reflects Kabat’s long exploration of urban space and materiality, while her painterly marks maintain a sense of movement and spontaneity. Her practice pushes abstraction forward, uniting vibrant color fields with the physicality of process-driven mark-making.

Maya Kabat
Through densely worked surfaces, California artist Maya Kabat builds oil paintings where abstraction and process converge. Using drywall tools, she layers slabs and ridges of pigment into rectilinear forms, each mark carrying the momentum of her hand and body. Her dynamic surfaces balance order and spontaneity, inviting viewers into a tactile, visceral encounter. Vivid colors and shifting geometries echo both landscape and the human body, while her sensitivity to pattern and structure reflects an ongoing influence from quilt making. Kabat earned her BA from Oberlin College and her MFA from UC Davis. She was a founding member of the artist-run gallery, Mercury Twenty, in Oakland. Residencies include The London Intensive, sponsored by the Camden Arts Centre in London, the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation Artist Residency in New Berlin, New York and the Gambrell Gallery Artist Residency in Ashland, Oregon. She has exhibited at many West Coast galleries such as Vielmetter Gallery (Los Angeles) and SLATE Contemporary (Oakland). Her work is represented in the collections of Kaiser Permanente, Cisco Systems, Stanford Hospitals, and The Neiman Marcus Collection. Select press includes a 2023 feature in 48 Hills, with additional reviews in East Bay Monthly, Art Ltd., SF Weekly, and the San Jose Mercury News. Her studios are in North Berkeley and in Oakland, California, at The Dome—workspaces established in 1976 by the artists Anne and Peter Voulkos

"Aquatic Forest" Contemporary Large Scale Abstract Painting, violet, turquoise
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
This is a large scale, contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Vertical elongated forms in rose pink, mauve, lavender and turquoise blue rise over a layered field of cream white brushed with violet. Washes of red and orange fade into hot pink in this vibrant abstract painting by the artist. You can see the influence of tropical colors in this canvas and a wistful yearning for the beach and the sea.
Debra Drexler is an American painter, installation artist, curator and professor. Her work is informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific since 1992. She has participated in over thirty solo and over 100 group exhibitions in national and international venues including Front Room Gallery, Exit Art, The Drawing Center, White Box-The Annex, Art Finance Partners, Van Der Plas Gallery, Sideshow Gallery, and Denise Bibro Gallery in New York, as well The Honolulu Museum of Art and Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Debra Drexler is a Professor at the University of Hawaii, where she is Chair of the Drawing and Painting Area. She maintains studios in Brooklyn, NY and on the island of Oahu in Hawai’i. Debra Drexler's most recent work is highly experimental large-scale abstract painting. In a recent review of a two-person exhibition (Whitehot Magazine,2017) Drexler's work as clearly referencing the long tradition of American abstraction and the established legacy of the New York School. The reviewer, Jonathan Goodman, described the work as a “new non-objectivity” that comes out of the current moment. He states that Drexler's painting “quite accurately describes the spirit of abstract art today, in which painting is struggling to break free of the constraints of time."
Debra Drexler frequently uses hot pink, a color with heavily gendered associations. Her hot pink brushstrokes...

"Violet Canyon" Large Scale Abstract Painting
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
Vibrant violet and fuchsia pink brushstrokes flow into intense orange fields of color in this abstract painting by Debra Drexler. A large scale painting, Drexler employs methods of gestural abstraction, capturing a warmth in her color palette
Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...
