Geometric Abstract with Circles in Acrylic on Canvas
Bright and colorful abstract composition by Melvin K. Allen (American, 1922-2012). Several circles are shown overlapping each other at the edges. They are floating on top of a light blue background, surrounded by other colorful shapes. There are a few areas of texture in the under layer, likely created with thick gesso.

Melvin K. Allen (American, 1922-2012) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and an MBA from NYU. He spent most of his life working as a securities analyst, and then a stockbroker and Vice President at Oppenheimer & Co., retiring in 1988. At this time he began painting more consistently, working in his home studio and at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, under the tutelage of Bruce Dorfman from the Art Students League. He was best known for his “shaped canvases” which use form and shape in addition to color. Allen was adamant about not naming his pieces, so as not to “inhibit or impose [him]self on the viewer’s response.” He also would only sign his pieces on the back, for the same reasons. Allen has participated in juried and group shows throughout New York and New Jersey, and his paintings are held in private collections in Los Angeles, New York, Washington DC, Savannah, Massachusetts, and Chicago.
