Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Mercedes Matter (1913 - 2001) Mercedes Matter, daughter of noted Philidelphia artist Arthur B Carles, wife of Swiss born photographer and graphic designer Herbert Matter, Mercedes was the founder of New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture. She studied & worked closely with Hans Hofmann. The Matters were active in the emerging New York art scene and also traveled frequently to Europe. Their closest friends included Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Franz Kline, Philip Guston, Alexander Calder and Willem de Kooning. They were also close to Alberto Giacometti, who was an important artistic role model for Mrs. Matter and a frequent photographic subject for her husband.

He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960. Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s.
