Michael Giles
He was beautiful without ever having spoken a word - red, geometric - Abstract

2016

About the Item

"He was beautiful without ever having spoken a word" stems from finding pattern and rhythm in the world around him. His paintings begin from finding places and spaces between words and lines in the text of "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia. These spaces/rhythms/patterns serve as the beginning of the paintings onto which he adds color, line, and paint. The colors and patterns come from instinctual spaces in his head; they are worked and worked over on the canvas in layers which are considered, covered, and combined. Taking a cue from the Deleuzian “becoming” his paintings are an attempt to find a new meaning in the spaces between these disparate influences; an attempt to combine text into visual language; an attempt to find a new impetus to make art. In "He was beautiful without ever having spoken a word", Michael creates a composition that uses the triangle as its main point of cohesion. The hues of small neutral yellow triangles are balanced by a bold and saturated yellow triangle throughout the composition. These are further balanced by small neutral blue triangles, dark blue horizontal lines, and a bright blue intersecting the middle of the painting. There are also 5 different tones of red in the painting. Besides the small red triangles, a vibrant, saturated, cadmium red is used in the background while a less saturated red anchors the painting at the bottom. In the bottom foreground, small bits of rectangular, white instances have been sprayed over with brown enamel paint. Finally a bright orange has been used to create more linear elements intersecting the triangles. Michael Giles is a Venezuelan-American artist working primarily in painting and drawing. He has exhibited internationally, and currently lives and works in Knoxville, TN. Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, he was raised in Baltimore, OH. He studied as part of the Reciprocal Exchange Program at Edith Cowan University (Perth, Australia, 1996) and received a BFA from the Ohio State University in 2000, and a MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 2007. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN.

Untitled (Triptych 6) : contemporary abstract work of art

Abstract geometric artwork by a contemporary artist Gerald Wolfe. Gerald Wolfe’s wall pieces have a three-dimensional, architectural feel. The artist’s approach to his paintings is intuitive. He meticulously creates his works step by step, imbuing shapes and lines with energy. The interplay of forms, color, and texture creates tension between flatness and depth. His work can become a unique gift and will be a wonderful addition to any space, be it a living room of a modern home or a lobby of a commercial building. Gerald Wolfe received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Maryland in 1972, discovered his interest in art and went on to study fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In the summer of 1974, he also studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. From his first show in 1979, a summer invitational at OK Harris Gallery, Gerald has shown his work on a consistent basis in New York, including such galleries as Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC, and Kim Foster Gallery, NYC .
