About the Item
Shulman, Morris (American, 1912-1978). UNTITLED. Casein on paper, circa 1951. Signed, lower left. 14 1/2 x 21 3/4 inches, framed to 23 x 30 inches. In excellent condition.
Shulman studied at the National Academy of Design in New York from 1931 to 1934. He had his first exhibition at the 1939 World's Fair. After WWII he studied at the Art Student's League and with Hans Hoffmann at Hoffmann's school. He later taught at the Brooklyn Museum School, The School of Visual Arts, Cooper Unon, and the Skowhegan School. From 1948 on he summered on Monhegan Island, and today is best known as a Monhegan painter.

Morris Shulman
Morris Shulman was born in Savannah, Georgia, but spent most of his professional career in Manhattan. He studied with Hans Hofmann in 1948–49 and painted on Maine's Monhegan Island from about 1947–65. Rocks & Sea is representative of his works from the period from the very late 1940s through the mid-1950s. Shulman is very well listed, and his works can be found in the National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian.
