About the Item

This contemporary abstract expressionist painting, depicting two women in dance, was created by French artist Natalya Mougenot. It forms part of her ongoing series dedicated to women—a central and enduring theme in her body of work. In this series, Natalya delves into the multifaceted nature of femininity, celebrating not just the physical form but also the emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of being a woman. Each piece serves as an introspective exploration of identity, strength, vulnerability, freedom, and transformation. The artist’s inspiration is deeply personal—rooted in her own journey through a period of profound change, where she discovered new qualities within herself that reshaped how she moved forward in life. That inner awakening continues to fuel her creative process. In this particular work, Natalya draws inspiration from Henri Matisse—specifically his use of bold color fields and fluid, expressive forms. Much like Matisse, she employs blue not just as a background but as an emotional space, evoking openness, intuition, and serenity. Both artists share a fascination with the female form and the expressive potential of simplified, abstracted figures. Here, the blue backdrop acts as a visual stage where the dance unfolds—a timeless, symbolic realm where form and movement speak louder than words. Natalya shares: "This piece is a pure dialogue between two women in movement, in dance. There is also a dialogue with your own body and mind—if they are in harmony, you will find harmony with your partner in dance." She adds: "As in many of my works, I want to portray the freedom of a woman. I wish every modern woman could feel this sense of freedom—in movement, in thought, and in action." The painting captures the vibrant energy of human motion through bold, abstract silhouettes rendered in fiery oranges and rich reds. These figures, faceless and elongated, exude rhythm and emotion, their forms set in contrast against the deep blue background. Visible brushstrokes and layered textures give the canvas a visceral, almost tactile quality, while subtle accents of green punctuate the composition, introducing visual depth and complexity. What emerges is not just a visual scene, but a felt experience—an exploration of freedom, connection, and the unspoken dialogue that lives in movement. Natalya’s intuitive process is evident in every stroke. As she explains: "I was guided by intuition when creating these two women—driven by raw emotion. I want viewers to feel that this is not just a conversation between bodies, but also a mental dialogue about freedom, confidence, and self-assurance." Through this work, Natalya Mougenot offers more than an image—she offers a moment, a sensation, and an invitation to connect with one’s own inner rhythm. Her multicultural background and personal experience inform her bold, expressive works, which have found homes in private collections around the world. Natalya’s distinctive visual language blends Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut—resulting in paintings that are raw, instinctive, and emotionally resonant. Across her work, three values guide her: authenticity, sincerity, and honesty. “Authenticity is everything,” she says. “People can always feel when something is real—or when it’s not. I want my work to be honest, to come from a place that’s true.” In addition to painting, Natalya is also a passionate photographer. Her photographic work—also featured on this platform—mirrors her painterly sensibility: a poetic, observational approach that captures the quiet power of everyday life. For her, photography is both inspiration and a form of presence, often serving as visual sketches for future paintings or existing as standalone works.
