The French title of the work translates in English to "With Thorns". The painting captures the rose’s mysterious allure, balancing beauty with an undercurrent of danger. A deep, warm red saturates the antique natural linen, with the thorned stems subtly absorbed into the fabric’s texture. Bold yet delicate, the piece features a rich, neutral palette that complements its timeless feel.
Painting is composed with only dye on antique French linen. Terracotta red and black dyes absorb together to create rich movement, texture and depth in the work. Black dye streaks bleed into the bottom of the painting, conveying a silhouette of stems to anchor the piece.
Evans Deventer stamp on back of canvas features name, year and place of the work, alongside artist, Nicholas Evans', signature.

Nicholas Evans
Nicholas Evans is an American, Paris-based artist, designer and creative director. Painting is a cornerstone of Evans’s artistic expression, which is largely inspired by personal events, religious symbolism, and historical allegories.
In addition to traditional oil and acrylics, Evans uses materials such as plasters, wax, salt and found objects in his works, presenting a way to seek new meaning in elements that have collapsed or eroded over time. Threads of poetry convey the fragmented logic of suffering, lost love and redemption that push him to create.
After early success in New York’s fashion and creative industry — followed by nearly losing his life to addiction — a liver transplant gave way to a new perspective and allowed Evans to reinvent himself. Inspired to revisit the rudiments of expression through his first love of painting, Nicholas began working under the moniker of Evans Deventer to present his art.
Through Evans Deventer, he is continuously intrigued by the “decayed decadence” of long-held traditions and the looming past, and how to represent them visually. Evans Deventer is also represented as a brick and mortar space, which he designed in 2015, featuring furniture, jewelry and objects, in addition to artwork.

In this affecting composition, Yektai combines the dynamism of the abstract expressionist style with the soft, meditative qualities of Monet's waterlilies.
Yektai first paints the canvas with loose strokes of rich deep greens. A pinkish red abstract form takes center stage - ang highlights of yellow flank the edges. Then he pours a clear-grade liquid resin onto the painted canvas and lets it harden into a glassy surface. Finally, he uses linear brushstrokes connecting colors into forms, in the typical impressionist style. Yektai varies the volume in which he applies paint, from thin and dry to sopping wet and thick. This process allows for a more three-dimensional experience of the painting. One can see through layers which build-up to create the flurry of brushstrokes. The reflective surface makes space for the viewer to see themselves in the painting, looking back at them. A contemporary notion.
