Olivier Julia
Juxtaposition II - contemporary modern geometric sculpture painting panel

2014

$700

About

Juxtaposition II is a unique small size modern sculpture painting panel by French-Dutch artist Olivier Julia. The panel hangs slightly free from the back wall, creating a floating visual experience and is another example of his explorations of panel type objects. This specific panel was one of the signature works of his 40th-artist-anniversary exhibition in December 2019 and has now become available for global collectors. Juxtaposition II is mentioned in the artist's monography that was published in honour of his anniversary exhibition. Well known Dutch art historian Jaap Nijstad wrote about these panel works: "Height, width and depth determine the relationship between line, plane and colour. Panels, singular or connected as a diptych or polyptych, practically dissolve, as it were, the traditional barriers between paintings and sculpture. Some have a smooth surface, while others feature compositions made using various techniques and structures, sometimes with added pigments. The mutual and reciprocal influence of the colours is more dominant in these panels." Olivier Julia (1952, France) graduated with a BA in Graphic Art from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Until recently he held a tutoring position in graphic art at the same academy besides practicing as an independent artist. Since his retirement from the academy he works as a full-time visual artist. Originally his work consists of sober graphic art and monumental drawings, but in more recent years he has explored the dimensional possibilities of graphic art. He creates three-dimensional objects from wood, often painted in subdued colours that are characteristic of his earlier work: differentiated shades of grey and deep blacks. The work of Olivier Julia is focussed on the subtle interaction of closed versus open, of vertical versus horizontal and of light versus dark. His work is exhibited internationally and is part of many renowned corporate and public collections such as ING, KPN, TNT Post, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Vaasa Museum Finland, Royal Library of Brussels, the Wilploo Collection and the MAL Collection. Furthermore his work is part of numerous private collections around the world including Europe, the USA and South America. His work was selected for the main Dutch abstract-geometric and constructivist art exhibition Symposion 2015.
