About the Item
From a mauve ground in the lower aspect of this large tondo by Otto Rogers, passages of green and black rise and intersect earthy shapes at a cloudy horizon. The geometry of the tondo, Italian for round, concentrates attention on the center of the image making the painting more self-referential.
Rogers work, rooted in a cubist-constructivist tradition, was recognized by art critic Clement Greenberg in 1963 as having a "fullness of inspiration". In keeping with this sentiment, Rogers' tonal expression in this piece is contemplative, spiritual and uplifting.
Rogers (1935-2019) was a prominent Canadian artist whose paintings, mixed media and sculptures are included in more than 30 public collections across Canada, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the McMichael Canadian Collection, the National Gallery of Canada. His work is also in the Museu d'art contemporain de Barcelona and the National Gallery of Iceland as well as numerous private and corporate collections Rogers helped sustain the Emma Lake Workshops which provides a meeting place for many of North America's most respected visual artists and critics including Clement Greenberg, Barnett Newman, Jules Olitiski, Kenneth Noland, Jack Shadbolt, Helen Frankenthaler. In 2007, a published book of his work Otto Donald Rogers, included a foreword by British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro.

Otto Rogers
Otto Rogers, depicts a geometric landscape using neutral colour tones. Rogers was born in 1935 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. He attended the Saskatchewan Teachers College (1954) and received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education (1958) and a Masters in Fine Art (1959) from the University of Wisconsin. As Professor and Head of the Department of Art at the University of Saskatchewan (1959–88), Rogers helped revive the Emma Lake Artist Workshops, Saskatchewan (1971–87). From 1988–98, Rogers lived in Haifa, Israel, where he served two five-year terms as a Counselor member of the International Teaching Center at the World Centre for the Baháʼí Faith. Following those years, he lived and worked in Prince Edward County, Ontario until his passing in late April 2019. Rogers' works are found in over 1600 major public, corporate and private collections in North America, Asia and Europe including Art Gallery of Ontario, Edmonton Art Gallery, Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Montreal Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona Spain; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Canada; Bank of Montreal; General Foods and Scotiabank.
