About the Item

Throughout her career as a painter Patty Fabricant has pivoted back and forth between figurative and abstract work. Each time she makes the switch it feels abrupt, and yet increasingly the cross-pollination between the two disciplines it becomes a smoother landing. After the 2016 election she switched her practice from decorative abstraction to self-portraits, as a response to the intense emotions she was feeling every day. Late last year she just could not look in the mirror anymore, so she began making small gouache panels. Fabricant can make them in a single session, and they take her out of herself. She has a deep and abiding interest in process-driven work, from mandalas and yantras to Aboriginal song-line paintings, Islamic tiles, and the Pattern and Decoration movement. She is also interested in ‘hand’, in the tension between lyrical gesture and tightly controlled patterning. Nothing is sketched out in advance, ruled, or measured, it’s all intuitive. Fabricant starts with an image in her head, or a thought of a color, and build from there. She's not looking for hard edges or precise symmetry. She's interested in movement, pattern, density, and perhaps above all in color relationships. She embraces visceral, unapologetic beauty. Patricia Fabricant is a painter and award-winning book designer, born in New York City. She received her BA from Wesleyan University and studied painting in Florence Italy. Her abstract and figurative paintings have been exhibited widely at such galleries as ODETTA, M David & Co, Front Room, SFA Projects, Equity Gallery, Morgan Lehman, the Painting Center, and 490 Atlantic. She has also begun a curatorial practice, with two editions of the benefit group show, Among Friends, and Studio Mates at Front Room Gallery. She lives in Brooklyn and shares a studio at the Elizabeth Foundation, in Manhattan.
