Ralph Rosenborg "Rock Flowers" Signed Abstract Expressionist Oil, Framed 1965

1965

About the Item

RALPH ROSENBORG – "ROCK FLOWERS" Oil on Canvas ⚜ Signed & Dated Lower Left & Verso ⚜ Float Frame A VIBRANT EXPRESSIONIST WORK FROM A TRUE AMERICAN MODERNIST In Rock Flowers, painted in 1965, Ralph Rosenborg channels the emotional power of pure abstraction with his signature palette knife technique and intense chromatic layering. Striking red and white impasto gestures emerge from a deep gray-brown ground, producing a bold vertical composition that recalls Rosenborg’s interest in organic structure and natural rhythm. The painting is framed in a custom float-style wood frame, allowing the raw edges of the canvas to remain visible — an intentional presentation choice that complements the raw energy of the work. Signed and dated on both the front (lower left) and verso, this piece also includes the artist’s original label on the reverse, further authenticating its history. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Signed & Dated 1965 – Signature and date appear both front and verso ✓ Authentic Artist Label – Original label affixed to verso (see image) ✓ Rare Mid-Career Example – Painted during Rosenborg’s mature period ✓ Float Frame – Custom wood float frame shows full canvas edge ✓ Museum-Level Artist – Held in MoMA, Guggenheim, Whitney, and the Met ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: Rock Flowers ▸ Artist: Ralph Rosenborg (1913–1992) ▸ Medium: Oil on Canvas ▸ Year of Creation: 1965 ▸ Signature: Hand-signed and dated by artist lower left and on verso ▸ Country of Origin: United States ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Canvas Size: 26.25x23.125 inches — ◻︎ Framed Size: 27.75x24.625x2.375 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent – Rich surface texture and well-preserved paint layer ▸ Framing: Custom Float Frame – Professionally presented, ready to hang INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Artist label affixed to verso (see image) ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document THE ARTIST: Ralph Rosenborg (1913–1992) was an influential American painter whose lyrical approach to abstraction set him apart from many of his contemporaries. Deeply connected to the natural world, Rosenborg pursued a visual language rooted not in geometry but in emotive form, allowing energy and atmosphere to drive his compositions. Born and raised in New York City, Rosenborg showed early promise and won a scholarship to art classes at the American Museum of Natural History. There, he began a mentorship with Henriette Reiss, a Bauhaus-influenced artist who had worked directly with Wassily Kandinsky. Under Reiss's guidance, Rosenborg developed a holistic understanding of art, music, and literature that would shape his future explorations in painting. By the 1930s, Rosenborg was actively exhibiting, gaining attention for his expressive works that stood in contrast to the rigid geometry favored by many modernists. He became a founding member of the American Abstract Artists in 1936, and shortly after joined “The Ten,” a collective that included Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, and Louis Schanker — all of whom were committed to advancing nontraditional art in America. Over the course of his career, Rosenborg’s work maintained a commitment to abstracting from life rather than from theory. While others turned toward pure formalism, Rosenborg continued to draw inspiration from lived experiences — landscapes, botanical forms, seascapes — rendered in thickly layered oil or gestural watercolor. He exhibited widely in both solo and group shows for more than five decades and was closely associated with other influential voices in 20th-century abstraction, including Arshile Gorky, Joseph Stella, Ad Reinhardt, Franz Kline, and Willem de Kooning. Today, Rosenborg's work resides in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, and the Phillips Collection. His legacy is that of a painter who stayed grounded in observation while helping shape the trajectory of Abstract Expressionism in the U.S.

This work is defined by layered organic strokes of deep blues, vibrant greens, and subtle earth tones, forming a rhythmic interplay of color and light. Nordin’s distinctive brushwork creates a composition that shifts dynamically depending on light and perspective, a hallmark of his innovative approach. His technique results in an immersive, pulsating visual field—where each mark remains distinct yet seamlessly integrates into the whole. This meticulous layering and structured spontaneity connect his work to Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, and Color Field painting. His work draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Mark Rothko, Sam Francis, Josef Albers, Kazimir Malevich, and the Optical Art movement pioneered by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. While elements of his work reflect the gestural expressiveness of Abstract Expressionism, his approach to composition and structure aligns with Color Field painters such as Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler. Born in 1945, Nordin traveled extensively before settling in California, where he studied fine arts at Cerritos College and later earned his MFA at Claremont Graduate School, concentrating on printmaking and experimental painting techniques. Early in his career, he experimented with plexiglass, vinyl, and alternative surfaces, seeking ways to push the boundaries of traditional painting. By the 1970s and 1980s, Nordin became known for his Transparent Sumi Brush Mark series, in which he developed a meticulous method of layering individual brushstrokes to form structured, organic compositions. These works, featuring veils of fluid color and precise gestural marks, evoke the optical depth and rhythmic movement found in Bridget Riley’s Op Art...
