Harry Koursaros, Artist, painter, printmaker and filmmaker Student at Albright College class of 1950. In 1964 he came to Albright College as professor to establish an Art Department, and gained national recognition. He started as a modernist realist, later moving to Abstract Expressionism and eventually into Pattern & Decoration. He painted with metallic and iridescent pigments. In the late 1960s he began a program of "underground" films at the college. Many of these were avant-garde works from New York that included works by Andy Warhol. One of Koursaros students, Jerry Tartaglia, founded in 1974 the Berks Filmmakers, a group of cutting-edge movie makers who acquired an international reputation. He was included in numerous shows: "Discovering Color": Two Decades of Abstraction, paintings, works on paper, and prints from three pivotal art movements in America during the sixties and seventies: Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, and Minimalism. Lersy, dated 1961 lower right Measuring 35 X 31 Matted and framed. sight 26 X 21.5 Roger Lersy was born in Paris, France 1920, in the rough neighborhood surrounding Place Pigalle. His youth was marked by extreme poverty. Lersy studied art and music at the École des Arts Apppliqués. He was a painter, lithographer and musician-composer He belongs to the École de Paris and was a member in the movement of the Young Painting. By 1946, when he first exhibited in Paris, Lersy became one of the founders of the School of Paris’ New Graphic School. Lersy received the Prix des Amateurs d’Art in 1953, the Shell Prize in 1954 and the Grand Prize of the City of Marseilles in 1953. Lersy could be defined as a Baroque expressionist. For Bernard Dorival, Roger Lersy is along with Gabriel Dauchot, Jean Commère and Raymond Guerrier among "the most noted champions of this expressionism which is part of the continuation of Bernard Buffet's miserabilism". Walker studied at the University of Oregon and Columbia University with art historian Meyer Shapiro. She also attended the New York Studio School with instructors Sidney Geist, Philip Guston, Alex Katz, and Esteban Vicente. Throughout Walker’s career, which began in 1970, she has exhibited at galleries in Canada and in the United States. Her work has subsequently been collected by Citibank and JPMorgan Chase banks. Joy Walker: 1970 - 1995: 25 Years, George Woodman New York, NY: 55 Mercer St. Gallery, 1995.Includes essays by George Woodman, Gary Michael Dault, Yvonne Lammerich, and Andre Zarre; Accompanied a 1995 exhibition. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. These artists also looked for inspiration outside of the United States. The influence of Islamic tile work from Spain and North Africa are visible in the geometric, floral patterns. They looked at Mexican, Roman, and Byzantine mosaics; Turkish embroidery, Japanese woodblocks; and Iranian and Indian carpets and miniatures. They often retained the same 'flattening grid' frequently employed by Minimalist painters. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Artists included Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Susan Michod, Miriam Schapiro, Betty Woodman, and Robert Zakanitch. Joy Walker has been exhibiting paintings for thirty years. She is the winner of grants from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, Artists Space, Change, Inc., the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council and the New York Studio School.
