About the Item

Richard Hawk calls his works of oil on copper a “co-creation with nature”. Hawk turned to the melding of copper oxidation and traditional oil painting in 2011. His works on canvas, paper and copper hang in collections around the world. The paintings are contemporary in voice with classical references. Hawk has exhibited extensively in his home city of San Diego as well as galleries in Santa Fe, Aspen, Jackson Hole, and the Hamptons, NY. Strong design, intensity of expression and highly energetic paint handling create the aesthetic and excitement for which his work is known. “Paintings are beyond real,” says Hawk. “Art is a language we use to describe dreams. It celebrates how in life anything is possible.” ARTIST'S STATEMENT Art should be beautiful, a feast for the soul. In the case of my art, I also want it to say something about the looming challenges of social media, artificial intelligence, overpopulation and climate change. It’s paradoxical and inspiring for me that figures, as in the works of Klimt, Gauguin and others that inspire me, can express aesthetic power and grace and still reference the darker layers of human experience. The things we face as individuals and as a species — how can we ignore them in the making of art? Ever since I can remember I have felt that the natural world and human-made constructs were much in need of some kind of balance. So, this is the focus of my work. After looking at the artworks and thinking about these things and what we can do about them, I want people to feel good and party like there’s no tomorrow. Each day is precious.
