About the Item

Robert Motherwell The Studio 1987 Acrylic and charcoal on canvas 152.4 x 182.9 cms (60 x 72 ins) RM13966 P1140 When Motherwell made The Studio, in 1987, he was nearing the end of an extended period of revising earlier paintings. In preparing for a retrospective a few years earlier, he had brought older works out of storage to review, with the result that he reworked several canvases. One of these Red Je t'aime No. VIII part of the artist's mid 1950s Je t'aime Series was begun around 1957, the revised in 1982-83 and again in 1988. The Studio closely follows its composition, showing as it does what has been described as a still life on a tipped up table, with a figure standing to the left. The inspiration of works Motherwell had made thirty years earlier may have also caused him to revisit works that influenced him earlier in his career. In flattening the illusion of three dimensional space by flooding it with an intense and uniform red,The Studio is indebted to Henri Matisse's Red Studio. Meanwhile in its more austere treatment of Red Je t'aime No. VIII - notably the elimination of the earlier work's calligraphic text, and its inclusion of a yellow door in the background - it shares elements with Pablo Picasso's 1927-28 studio compositions. Both of these works had been hugely influential for Motherwell and his contemporaries; he once recalled " That painting was perhaps the most important influence on my life in those first ten years in New York. That incredible white... surely one of the most austere and powerful works since the height of Cubism... unquestionably one of the masterpieces of the twentieth century". Lauren Mahony, Exh. cat. In The Studio, Gagosian Gallery New York, 2015.

Great Wall of China No. 4
By Robert Motherwell
Located in London, GB
Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) Great Wall of China No. 4 1971 Acrylic and charcoal on canvas 152.4 x 101.6 cms (60 x 40 ins) RM10101 P617 This work is part of the artist's Great Wall of China series, of which there are only five paintings, all of which are in private hands. Painted on a traditionally primed canvas, it is an exploration of the tension between foreground and background. The U-shaped forms in this series of paintings are closely related to the paintings in Motherwell's Open series of which there are a greater number of paintings and drawings. Great Wall of China series refer to a Franz Kafka short story about the Chinese landmark, which certainly served as a dividing line in its time, and perhaps also to contemporaneous events involving China, such as Henry Kissinger...
