Ruby Tjangawa Williamson (d. 2014) is one of Australia's most sought-after Aboriginal artists. She was one of the founding artists of Tjala Arts (formerly Minymaku Arts, meaning “women’s art”). Due to her captivating work and endearing personality, Williamson developed a legion of both institutional and private fans. She was renowned for her great love of Country, which shone through in each work she created over a 15 year painting career. Williamson’s approach to painting was very contemporary in its ideas, perspective and application. By representing planar and aerial views of her subject simultaneously on her canvas, Williamson was able to highlight or emphasise various focal points of her narrative. The large fields of solid colour represent the Musgrave Ranges either viewed from the side, or if circular, from above. In this painting, the slightly brighter blue form inside the blue mountain range represents the water that collects in rock holes throughout the mountains. These mountains are very sacred, and certain areas are secret Men’s areas; women are not permitted to look at them. An integral component of Williamson’s compositions is the honey grevillea (an Australian native flowering bush), the fronds of which can be seen arching across her canvas. Grevillea has sweet nectar that can be sucked directly from the flower, or picked and added to water to make a cordial. Williamson experimented continuously, pushing boundaries with colour and composition. All of her works have a quirkiness and freshness that makes it difficult for non-Aboriginal people to pigeon-hole her artworks or compare her works with other Aboriginal artists. The work is an aerial view of the landscape and can therefore be hung horizontally or vertically.
