About the Item

This contemporary abstract painting was inspired by nature. This bucolic composition by Sandra Goldie, a Canadian artist features expressive, fluid brushstrokes. Shapes, hinting at the form of petals, leaves, vines and flowers in pastel hues—turquoise, lilac, greens and yellow float against a blush-coloured backdrop. Goldie begins each piece by creating a backdrop on the bare canvas with sienna or ‘terre verte’ (green earth) colours. Her paintings are lyrical, a result, she believes, of her early exposure to the freeform rhythm of jazz music. One of a series. “ Kill your Darlings”. It’s a phrase used by filmmakers and writers to describe the process of removing parts that don’t serve the story. I often have to take a breath and remove what I think is a beautiful passage to make the entire composition work. I can then rework the picture. Sometimes you have to be ruthless to make something beautiful.” Sandra Goldie Sandra Goldie pursued her dream of painting after a career as an interior designer by completing a BFA and graduating with distinction from Concordia University. While completing her degree, she opened a gallery for emerging artists in Montreal which she successfully grew for nearly a decade. During this time, the gallery participated in numerous art fairs, including Art Toronto. This second career as a gallerist followed her to the County and Oeno Gallery, where she continued to work with exceptional artists, both emerging and established. A decision to pursue a more personal career has put Goldie back in the studio. Her accumulated experiences from both the design world and the art world now influence her painting.

Deborah Dancy "Believe it or Not" - Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas
By Deborah Dancy
Located in New York, NY
Deborah Dancy Believe it or Not, 2021 oil on canvas 32 x 34 in. (dan029) This original contemporary abstract painting by Deborah Dancy is comprised of hues of light pink, lime green, grey, and maroon in her signature built up/re-built space that as she says, "operate in a realm in which beauty and tension simultaneously exist without explanation or narrative." Deborah Dancy is an abstract artist. Her paintings and drawings are sensuous provocations beset with marks that guide, then abruptly collide into confrontational slabs of color. There is an atmosphere of complex but urgent tension in her work, as she builds tangential linear demarcations, and abutting shapes, that provoke, entice and disrupt; -taking us everywhere and nowhere. From densely painted forms to more minimally declared images, Dancy’s work operates in the recognition that meanderings, intentional and accidental declarations are best when the beautiful and the disconcerting exist simultaneously. Dancy was born in Bessemer, Alabama and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She earned BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and an MFA from Illinois State University. She is the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Yaddo Fellow, and a National Endowment of the Arts NEFA award. Her work is in many collections including The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Birmingham Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum and The Detroit Institute of Art.
