This contemporary, geometric abstract, oil painting on panel is by artist Shayne Dark.
Shayne Dark calls his extraordinary new series of dynamic oil paintings—'calculated chaotic color.’ The Canadian artist is known for using expressive bold colors in his contemporary artwork. Inspired by a recent trip to Northern India and the heady vision of rich colors in that ancient land, Dark’s highly textured intersected series features hundreds of angled lines. Rendered in soft colors—white, pale yellow, and light red play against a white backdrop. The lines are layered and run vertically and horizontally across the canvas—a virtual web of energy and color. Number two in a series of nine.

Inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2018, Dark has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. In 2017, Dark had a solo exhibition and an artist residency at New York’s Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The same year, he had a solo exhibition at the Albright Knox, NY. Dark has received six Ontario Arts Council grants and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. His work may be found in numerous private, corporate, and public collections worldwide.

Shayne Dark
Poised between abstraction and representation, the artworks of Canadian artist Shayne Dark (b. 1952, Moose Jaw, SK) are often coated in eye-popping saturated pigments. His networks of steel branches or steel stones, indoor and outdoor iterations, are a contemplative intersection of the industrial and the organic. In 2016, Dark exhibited at the Brooklyn Sculpture Center, where he was artist in residence. The same year, he was given a solo exhibition at the Albright Knox, NY. Dark has received six Ontario Arts Council grants and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. His work may be found in numerous private, corporate and public collections including Queen’s University, the Canadian Embassy in Prague, the City of Ottawa, the Federal Communications Commission, New York.

Artist's Statement: "Around 30 years ago, not long after I had started painting seriously, I was at a one-man exhibition of the great Brice Marden at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art when I visited the annex to get a cocktail. There was one other guy at the small bar table in an otherwise empty room, waiting for his coffee to be handed to him. He turned and dumped half of it down my front. I immediately recognized him as none other than Brice Marden. He apologized profusely, but I stopped him and said: 'No problem: how often is it that Brice Marden dumps coffee on your pants? They're worth more now.' We both had a good laugh. At any rate - I was certainly channeling his early work when I began work on this series. They are made with oil and beeswax on wood panels. While they look Minimalist at first glance, there are subtle shifts in color and texture that distinguish them from hard-edged abstraction. For me, it has always been about the surface, and the materials. Wax has a character unlike anything else. I use wax both hot (encaustic) and in a cold mixture with turpentine, blended with oil.
