About the Item
"Eternal Return 2" in the "Hikaru" collection is an original painting by San Diego Artist Shima Shanti in the ancient art form of Encaustic. Hikaru—Japanese for Light and Radiance—is inspired by the stillness of silence and the absence of color of tone-on-tone hues of white. I integrate abstract design with bookman’s silver to express the simplicity of zen minimalism.
Up to 50 layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's aesthetic is minimal. Combined with all-natural earth elements and earth-tone palette unexpected levels of complexity surface in this simplicity.
Beeswax is one of nature's best preservatives impervious to moisture, UV light, durable and archival. The unique beauty of Encaustic painting is imperfection. There are bubbles, ripples and markings on the smooth-textured, high-gloss surface.
