About the Item

'Paradise, Remembered' Original Artwork. Unframed ___________________ Late August sun breaks joyously through the low morning cloud, an easterly breeze rustling through the strelitzia, fresh with the summer's growth, but retaining memories of last winter's storms in remnants of rags and tatters. I remember it's glorious flowers. The painting captures an essence of the ephemeral and the enduring: the fragile, fleeting blossom, wrapped in the ancient symbolism of floriography- the language of flowers, which for thousands of years has been a means of cryptological communication across cultures. 'Paradise, Remembered' is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which Sophia employs her unique style of working using the four elements of nature. "It is a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected. The physical plein air process of creating this painting captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: A painting scratched and scarred by the caress of stems and leaves, and the pulse of my body, holding as still as I can, swaying rhythmically, watchful of the responsive emulsion in the light. Then to be washed, bathed, reveled: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded". Mixed media on watercolour paper. With deep blue tones of cyanotype solution used as a painting medium, together with vibrant colours of richly layered acrylic ink. Signed and titled in pencil to the lower right corner/ lower centre. 58.5 x 41.5cm / 23 x 16.3 inches (unframed) * Please note that images in situ are an indication of how the piece can look, and that the artwork is being sold unframed. ________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan (b 1980) BA MA Sophia is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is held in prestigious international private collections with exhibitions across the UK, USA and Europe. "Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. Like the wind sculpted trees and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by this ancient raw environment. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice.' Finding magic in the flux and balance in the nature of all things, my artwork explores fragile, fleeting moments of interdependent relationships: the sensual interplay of light and shadow; wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; virile life and peaceful dormancy; the enduring and the effervescent. It is in melancholy beauty flowing between shifting seasons, and in human narratives tangled among wild landscapes, that I find my inspiration. It is in the blurred boundaries between restless seas and stoic stones; where the solidity of the soil meets the freedom of the air; where temporariness is the only constant. As such, I enjoy working with a balance of control and freedom: discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters, and the unexpected. We are all the stories of the journeys that came before, carrying with us ancient immutable connections whilst leaving our marks and memories in tangible traces across the surfaces of our travels. I weave into my work tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary processes. I see beauty in the imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Through photography, painting, poetry and drawing- with marks, mixtures, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze; I illuminate the ordinary, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation." Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in prestigious international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include Penwith Society of Arts, St. Ives Society of Artists; 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; Newlyn Art Gallery; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago. _____________________________ Modern . "Petalled Recollection" - colorful abstract painting - nature - botanical
By Evan Blackwell-Helgeson
Located in Atlanta, GA
This work on canvas is a mixed media abstract work featuring hues of blue, orange, and green. Framed in a natural wood floater frame measuring 20 by 16 inches. Evan is inspired by the works of Frank Bowling, Helen Frankenthaler, Candida Alvarez and Dorothy Hood. Atlanta-based artist, Evan Blackwell Helgeson’s recent body of work “I Know The Place,” is rooted in the exploration & abstraction of nature, combining the representational with the metaphorical & intangible experience of varied landscapes. Her mark-making aims to express the complex compounded layering of experience as we process varying circumstances, emotions & memories while in nature. “I Know The Place” explores the dichotomy & simultaneity of the cycles of nature & lived experience: as new things bloom, something is decaying; as new terrain is explored, a yearning for home grows. Travel in recent years to the Pacific Northwest & Hawaii have deeply influenced Evan’s work, & have come to intertwine with the layered marks & known gestures that express her own home. It has provided a unique contrast to these known environments & subsequent mark making, drawing unique parallels to the way we compile experiences that create our complex perspectives; interweaving memory & possibility to create new paths forward. "Traveling from the dense layers of the treeline where horizons are hidden, a desire to find a path out begins to grow," says Evan. "Similarly, the wide expanse & monolithic scale of the coastline displays the fullness of the horizon & the dizzying implication of new possibilities & the unknown. One does not negate the other, but rather they inform each other, recalling the cycle of being drawn out into new terrain, & receding deep into the comfort of home. An ebb & flow that creates dynamic balance." Evan Blackwell Helgeson is an Atlanta-based artist who works in painting, drawing, installation & ceramics. She received a BFA from the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd...
