About
"Portrait of Viri," an original tempera painting on paper by Suzanne Caporael, is a piece for the true collector. Both the technical talent of Caporael and her choice of subject matter pair perfectly with the custom wood frame. This masterful work is perfect for those who have an affinity for abstracts and color-rich works. This Caporael painting has an important history, with the rare provenance of being owned by Jan Turner, a prominent Los Angeles art gallery owner, who lent the work for a 1986 exhibition at the Santa Barbara Art Museum. The painting also moved passed through Irit Krygier Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, before being acquired by a prominent contemporary art collector in Los Angeles. Full provenance details are outlined below.
Los Angeles Times article chronicling Corporael at the Santa Barbara Museum (copy included in image bank above): "Los Angeles artist Suzanne Caporael is the first of five artists to be featured in a series of exhibitions at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, organized under the collective title "California Viewpoints." Her haunting works – 13 large oil paintings in all – are on exhibit in the Park Wing Gallery through June 8 [1986]. Her artwork has been described as realistic, surrealistic, abstract, symbolic, and idiosyncratic by critics."

About the Artist: Suzanne Caporael, an American artist, is known for her paintings examining elements of the physical world around us, and our attempts to control them.
Suzanne Caporael was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1949. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. She had her first show in 1984, when Director Paul Schimmel debuted her work at the Newport Harbor Art Museum (now the Orange County Museum of Art). Two years later, she was awarded a National Endowment grant, which proved to be the true beginning of an illustrious career in the arts.
Her work has focused on phenomena of the physical world – the periodic table, tree rings, estuaries, melting ice. She examines the temporal beauty of nature by examining the relationships between elements. In each case, she studies her subject extensively, and then develops a visual vocabulary with which to paint it. The result is a curious mix of the conceptual and the aesthetic.
Since that first show in California, Caporael has held multiple solo and group exhibitions in galleries around the U.S., including the Richard Gray Gallery, IL; Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, NY; Richard Levy Gallery, NM; SOMA Gallery, CA; Khan Gallery, NY; John Berggruen Gallery, CA; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, CA; Museum of Contemporary Art, CA; & Stephen Wertz Gallery, CA. For the past 10 years, she has held multiple solo exhibitions at the Miles McEnery Gallery, NY. A select group of Caporael's contemporaries with whom she showed in 1986 included John Altoon, Karl Benjamin, Joan Brown, Sam Francis, John Mason, Ed Ruscha, and Paul Wonner.
Her work can be found in public and private collections around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Carnegie Museum of Art, PA; Chazen Museum of Art, WI; Detroit Institute of Arts, MI; Fogg Museum, Harvard Art Museums, MA; High Museum of Art, GA; Portland Museum of Art, ME; Yale University Art Gallery, CT; Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; & San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA.
Caporael has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the San Francisco Art Institute. And, in 2009, she was a guest artist-in-residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation.
She currently resides in Connecticut with her husband, novelist Bruce Murkoff.
