Theodoros Stamos
Burning Bush from Jerusalem Series

1989

About the Item

Burning Bush, 1989, by Theodoros Stamos (1922-1987) Acrylic on canvas 66 x 50 inches unframed (167.64 x 127 cm) Inscribed (Infinity Field Jerusalem Series Burning Bush 1989 Stamos) on reverse Description: Theodoros Stamos was born in an era of art upheaval which he took part in as an Abstract Expressionist and an Irascible in the New York School. His use of primitivized forms and simplified, ominous shapes were inspired by ancient Chinese and Japanese media, Hellenism, and his extensive travels through Europe in the mid-nineteenth century. Stamos’ paintings offer explorations of color, shape, and line, through which Stamos developed a style of painting that became the basis for the Color Field Movement. In this painting, his interests in religion along with his employment of Color Field Painting create an ominous composition that concerns itself with the fundamental elements of art. In his oil painting, Theodoros Stamos uses monochromatic hues to elevate an amorphous form to a state of uneasiness. The red background against the muted brown of the strange, organic shape seems to glow, even through the rendered form. The asymmetrical composition, the juxtaposition of bright red to a cool purple, and the jagged edges of the shape all constitute an eerie, yet fascinating piece. This painting is part of the Jerusalem Series.

Dark Image, 1960 by Will Barnet (1911-2012) Oil on canvas 53 x 30 ½ inches unframed (134.62 x 77.47 cm) 55 ½ x 32 ⅞ inches framed (140.979 x 96.2152 cm) Signed and dated on top right on the reverse Description: This abstract oil painting by Will Barnet uses minute gradations in value to achieve a work that presents a contextual understanding of color. Upon first inspection, it looks as if Barnet has created a completely black canvas with some hints at forms in the darkness; however, upon a closer look, the canvas is, in fact, not black, but instead comprised of varied shades of dark, muted blues, grays, and purples. Barnet presents us with an illusion of vision, asking the viewer to question his perspective and understanding of color interplay. At the beginning of his career, Will Barnet was known for his figural depictions of domestic scenes. But, as he continued to stylistically develop, Barnet arrived at abstract geometric paintings far removed from his original career. A part of the Indian Space...

  • Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters) Italian Expressionist Painting on Canvas
    By Andrea Spinelli
    Located in Firenze, IT
The present work of art titled "Urban Abstraction (ripped off posters)" is part of a series of paintings that the artist composed in the 1980s and 1990s inspired by the observation of the urban reality of those years. The artist take the cue from his walks in Florence, both in the center and in the suburbs, and by the observation of billboards and posters scattered throughout the city. The mass of information, colors, messages and words were carried on the canvas with acrylic colors, ideally reconstructing the tears and overlaps of all the information and advertising contained on these huge sheets of paper that invade our cities. The geometric lines are overlaid with jagged lines, overlaps and color dripping and also the choice in the color palette, with different shades of white, gray, rose, orange red and blue helps in rendering the result of the tears and ripped paper. The result is a beautiful multicolored modern abstract canvas, both aesthetically and ethically, with many rich layers of color, texture and expression in which the artist leaves his own message. The painting is housed in a simple modern white lacquer wood frame. Andrea Spinelli...
