About the Item

Vivian Springford Vivian Springford (American, 1913–2003) was a color field painter, celebrated for her distinctive approach to abstraction. Initially influenced by Chinese calligraphy in the 1940s and 1950s, her work evolved into highly expressive, color-drenched canvases. Springford was a prominent figure in the post-WWII New York art scene, exhibiting with other notable figures and garnering attention for her dynamic, fluid compositions. Her abstract works often featured wash-like stains and calligraphic marks, showcasing her mastery of the Color Field movement. Despite her early success, she later withdrew from the art world due to macular degeneration, and much of her work was left forgotten until rediscovered in the late 1990s. Her revival in the art world led to renewed interest, and Springford’s pieces have been celebrated for their vibrancy and powerful emotional resonance.
