About the Item

Xavier Zevaco, (1925-2006) is a French painter and draftsman of Corsican origin. He moved to geometric abstraction very early and had exhibited with Jean-Michel Atlan, Nicolas de Staël and Serge Poliakoff since 1950. From 1940 he attended high school Louis-le-Grand then joined the Lycée Henri-IV, where there is great freedom of expression. It is in this prestigious high school he has the chance to have Georges Pompidou (President of the Republic from 1969 to 1974) as a professor of letters and made his portrait at the end of the school year that he will buy. Georges Pompidou will write on the guestbook of one of his first exhibitions "To Zevaco, as in myself I find myself. " He entered the Decorative Arts in 1943, where he obtained the highest mark of the postulants. At the end of his cycle, in 1947, and thanks to the scholarship acquired because he graduated from his class, he spent a year at the Beaux-Arts in Amsterdam. He took the opportunity to visit Germany and Poland, ravaged ... In 1950, Zevaco exhibited at the Colette Allendy Gallery, the Denise Renée Gallery and the Suzanne De Conninck Gallery. In May 1958, he presented the model Annabel Schwob to the painter Bernard Buffet. During the 1960s, he multiplied exhibitions in France but also abroad; Exhibition of Realities News in Paris, in several galleries in Spain, in Italy or at the Academy of Fine Arts in Turkey. He meets Claude Riviere, friend of Malraux and art critic, who praises Zevaco's painting in various magazines. He rubs shoulders with painters such as Sonia Delaunay, Schneider, Auguste Herbin, Hartung, Georges Mathieu and Caesar. In the early 1970s, he tried to kinetic sculpture. It exhibits less abroad and prefers Parisian venues: Galerie Inna Salomon, Chapter Gallery, International Exhibition of Contemporary Art. In 1990, his last friend, Christiane Peugeot Peyron opened a workshop, the Atelier Z, place of permanent exhibition Avenue of the Grande-Armée in Paris. Zevaco takes up the idea of moving works. In 2000, his works are exhibited at the UN Headquarters in New York, UNESCO in Beirut, Malta at the Biennial and the Senate Orangery for a retrospective. This work of the seventies is revealing of the talent of Zevaco, it is simple, pure and strong, its colors are cheerful and unusual. The layout is structured but not rigorous.
