Study of a hound in a landscape
By Sawrey Gilpin
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
Sawrey Gilpin (1733-1807) Study of a hound in a landscape Oil on canvas Canvas Size - 14 x 17 in Framed Size - 17 x 20 in Provenance: Victor Brockbank Fine Art, London; Private Collection, London. Sawrey Gilpin was a member of an old Cumberland family who chose a career in sporting painting, at which he was encouraged as a young man by the great Duke of Cumberland who had suppressed the Jacobite rising of 1745. Gilpin, though centred on London, always retained his Northern links, and had as patron many northern sportsman, like the sporting fanatic Colonel Thornton of Thornville Royal for whom he painted numerous pictures. Gilpin has suffered from being under the shadow of his incomparable contemporary George Stubbs, but he emerges as a leading horse and animal painter of a competence which is always reliable and occasionally inspired. He is an important link between the early English School of Wootton, Tillemans and the like, and the later painters exemplified by Ferneley and Herring. He was the president of the Society of Artists in 1773, and was elected RA in 1797. A clubbable man, he was popular with his fellow Royal Academicians. He frequently collaborated with them, adding portraits of favourite animals to numerous pictures by Barret, Walton, Romney, Zoffany, Reinagle and even the young Turner. He was the teacher of Thomas Gooch...

He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery. Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Folk Art Naive Oil Painting Ljubomir Milinkov Whimsical Pastoral Farm Landscape
By Ljubomir Milinkov
Located in Surfside, FL
Ljubomir Milinkov (1938) Oil painting on board, Whimsical pastoral farm landscape Hand signed upper right, Dimensions: painting 12-1/2 x 15-1/2 inches. framed 18.5 x 21.5 inches Ljubomir Milinkov depicts a fantasy like setting using bold colors, and carefully planned out brushstrokes. The figures and inanimate objects that fill the composition are out of proportion, bi-dimensional, and primitive, cartoonist in terms of style. In fact this painting is iconic of Milinkov's Naif style. His work was sold by Wally Findlay Galleries in New York and Palm Beach and he has designed silk scarves for Hermes. Born in Sovac, Serbia, Arrived in France in 1962. Milinkov enters the world of art. He begins to distill his own style. Good life and beautiful models on the Place du Tertre in Montmartre fill and inspire him. In 1967 he went on an adventure to the USA. For 6 months in 1968 he crossed America from New York to San Francisco aboard his own Cadillac hearse, bought for this trip. It's the full hippie period, he shaves his head in contrast to all the bearded people around him. Back in New York in 1969, he exhibited at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair with 60 artists, five hundred thousand visitors. Sponsored by the organizers to register for 2 years at the New York School of Fine Arts, he declines this generous offer to preserve his freedom and explore his own fauvist mode of expression. Proud to be a graduate of the Fine Arts Schools of “Nulle part” and “Every where”. In 1972 he opened his first solo exhibition at the Masseur Museum of Art, Monroe, Louisiana. In 1973 he joined the Wally Findlay International Gallery, with which he worked exclusively for 16 years, exhibiting in New York, Chicago, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, Paris. He was included in the show "One of a Kind" along with Artists: Camille Bombois, Orville Bulman, Henri Maik, Gustavo Novoa and Annette Ollivary. His tapestry “Noah's Ark” was purchased by the royal family of Saudi Arabia. In 1974 he returned to France and settled between Cannes and Paris. His collaboration with French design house legend Hermes began in 1982: creation of the first Carré “Jardin Enchanté”, followed in 1998 by Gavroches scarves “La Cavale Joyeuse” and “Les Ailes pleines de Joie” and in 2013 the Carré “Bateau Flowery”. It is the “Enchanted Garden” which will have had the honor in 1983 of being the emblem of Hermès' participation in the 150th anniversary of Central Park in New York, where he will be the guest of honor. Also in 1982, creation of his second Aubusson tapestry "Arche de Noé n ° 2". In 2000 his famous “Twin towers” paintings...

Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life, which comprised most of Bohrod's early work. Under Sloan's tutelage, Bohrod came to subscribe to the belief that painters should find the subjects of their art in the immediate world around them. These paintings emphasized architecture unique to north Chicago and featured Chicagoans engaged in such everyday activities as working, playing or going to the theatre. The romantic aspect was conveyed by the use of misty colors, and the realism by attention to detail. In 1936, Bohrod won the Guggenheim Fellowship award in creative painting...

French Modernist, Beautiful Summer Swallowtail Butterfly
Located in Harkstead, GB
An incredibly striking image of a Swallowtail butterfly. Painted with great energy and style. This would look stunning against a white wall. Henri-André Martin (1918-2004) A Swallowtail butterfly Signed Oil on canvas 23½ x 23½ inches excluding frame 26½ x 26½ inches including frame Provenance: The artist's studio sale Born in Lyon in 1918, Henri-André Martin spent his youth in Saint-Étienne. Following his father into the medical profession, he spent his first years studying medicine in Lyon, but also enrolled in the École de Beaux Arts during this time. Upon returning from captivity in 1942, Martin soon became director of the otolaryngology clinic at Édouard-Herriot hospital. Painting, however, remained his true calling in life - it was, to him, an invaluable form of self-expression. Reserved and extremely modest, and frequently regarded as somewhat aloof, art was a means of articulating his anxieties and apprehensions, as well as giving a voice to his inner child. Martin had a brush in hand at all times, wherever he went, and painted countless gouaches of varying sizes. His beach paintings in particular have been compared to those of Boudin. Until the 1970s, Martin had a tendency to paint ‘on the ground’, yet in all of his paintings, there is a distinct sense of distance and removal from the subject-matter. In the years that followed, we see a development in this simplification and abstraction of the subject-matter, as seen, for example, in his images of almond trees standing alone against the stark winter sky of Provence. The palette begins to darken, his work acquires a feeling of gravity, as his paintings of Hamburg Port evidently reflect. His collection entitled ‘Trunks’, six lithographic plates, draws on visual and written material in the book, L’Olivier. His interest in the symbolism of the olive tree subsequently grew, and he turned to literature, painting and historical traditions to develop and nuance his understanding of its allegorical value. This fascination with the olive tree, and more broadly, with the nature of symbolism, came to profoundly inform his later work. What he learnt to represent was not merely the physical reality of his subjects, but their implicit interconnection with abstract ideas. As René Déroudille writes, the lithographic plates are ‘especially devoted to and embrace renewal’, revealing an artist who is in ‘full mutation’. In the 1980s, Martin’s work took a more explicit turn towards abstraction. It was during this time that he produced a series of large nudes, which he entered into the major exhibition at L’Atrium in Lyon, in 1992. In the years that followed, Martin focused on animating the shapes and forms born of his imagination, eventually accomplishing this and changing his focus once again, turning to more attractive, even decorative subjects, like Japanese...

French Modernist, Beautiful Summer Butterfly
Located in Harkstead, GB
An incredibly striking image of a black and yellow butterfly. Painted with great energy and style. This looks stunning against a white wall. Israeli Judaica Shtetl "The Lesson" Rabbi Studying Scene Naive Art Oil Painting
Located in Surfside, FL
Natan Heber was trained by his father in Poland to be a ritual slaughterer. In 1925, he joined the Zionist movement "Mizrachi" and in 1936 immigrated to Palestine where he opened a poultry shop in Haifa. He began to paint at the age of sixty-one, after ill health forced him to retire. Driven by a need to memorialize his family and their shtetl community lost in the Holocaust, he drew scenes of traditional Jewish life. Unfamiliar with the conventions of scale and perspective, he set his heavily outlined frontal figures on steeply rising surfaces and often portrayed his father in monumental size to mark his importance. One of Israel's greatest naive-style painters. Along with Shalom of Safed, Kopel Gurwin and Gabriel Cohen, He is renowned as one of Israel's greatest living naive-style folk art painters, The Haifa Museum of Art will be opening the first ever Outsider Art exhibition (also known as Art Brut) in Israel in January 2013.
