Charles 'Sheep' Jones was a London painter of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He was of Welsh extraction, born near Cardiff. Charles Jones was well known as an animal painter and affectionately known as ‘Sheep’ Jones due to his skilful and realistic portrayal of sheep.Jones exhibited between 1860 and 1891 at the Royal Academy and from 1861 until 1883 at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society as well as various other venues. He was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester and circa 1890 was awarded a gold medal at the Crystal Palace. It is the meticulousness of Jones’ work, which appeals most to the contemporary imagination. As Formentin said, “Genius consists in taking measurements.
