Otto Weber
His Masters' Spaniels

About the Item

This beautiful painting is a fine example of his animal paintings depicting a hunter with his catch of a hare alongside his two dogs, which is signed in the bottom right hand side. Otto Weber was a German genre, landscape and animal painter in the 19th Century. Born on the 17th October 1832 in Berlin, Germany, he was one of the first to paint in the Breton village of Pont-Aven which later developed into an artists’ colony. Otto studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts and then he moved to Paris with Thomas Couture. In 1863-64, he moved to Brittany where he painted genre works giving it the romantic day to day life. He moved to London in 1872 at the request of Queen Victoria, where he exhibited annually at the Royal Academy and regularly received commissions from the Queen. He stayed in London until his death on the 23rd December 1888.
