Henry Garland
Collecting the Cattle

1876

About the Item

Known for his Highland landscape paintings, Garland was well regarded among his peers presenting work in the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, and British Institution. Signed by the artist on the lower left corner, and dated 1876 (verso), this painting dates to Garland's successful mid-career period, flourishing from 1854 when he won a medal for 'Best Drawing from the Life' to 1900. From a private collection, this work is presented in a monumental period gilt frame. Garland's work has been presented in London and UK, sold in galleries and in prominent auction houses. Oil on canvas, this painting has cloudy mountain views, gleaming silver river, and Highland cattle in the foreground and background, with figure and herding dog in the distance. Garland is renowned for this genre of plein art natural style in the Victorian period. The cattle have character and expression with rich color. Saltire Gallerie removed the glass covering and restored the panting to its original frame. Frame has five inch depth, with beaded border, leaf pattern with bead and fine detail. Please look at the new photos as the entre work looks refreshed. Ready to hang!
