About the Item

Massive size, this six-foot long oil painting makes an impression! Professionally preserved, this masterful work looks as contemporary and detailed as the day it was completed in 1870 by an award-winning artist. Encased in bronzed metal, "Highland Cattle' appeals widely, working in contemporary office settings as well as traditional living rooms. Signed with the artist's distinctive monogram and dated '70 in red, this oil on canvas painting has no less than 17 cows, two dogs and a figure in a mountain landscape with an old stone bridge, and cottages on a hill. Award-winning artist, Charles Jones won the gold medal at the Crystal Palace exhibition in 1890 for his distinctive style depicting animals, particularly cows and sheep, in sweeping rural and mountain landscapes. Jones was born in Wales, but spent most of his career working in London. His paintings often depicted Scottish scenes as well as Welsh and English. Jones graduated from the Royal College of Art and became a successful artist, flourishing from 1860s to 1890s. His work is well represented in collections including the National Trust, National Library of Wales, National Museum in Wales, Art Museums and Art Galleries. This painting came from an estate of a family in England that later moved to British Columbia, Canada. It was imported by Saltire Gallerie in the USA and professionally restored. The painting is presented in a modern bronzed metal framing. It was shipped with an older gesso and wood frame that sustained damage. However, this 19th century painting presents very well in this simple bronze metal surrounding. Ideal for a commercial setting, this painting also works remarkably well in both traditional and contemporary room designs. Sold with the bronzed metal, the traditional frame may also be purchased with this painting. Please inquire if the traditional frame is preferred. This painting has been substantially restored and preserved over time with re-lining, a repair, and in-painting visible with UV light mostly in the right side of sky, some grasses and small areas of a couple cows, A layer of clear varnish covers the painting, giving the work shine and protection. Small aging and old blemishes are visible on close inspection under the varnish. Ready to hang, this large painting will stand out on any wall. Price INCLUDES US continental shipping to your door.

The Trossachs, Scotland
By Alfred de Breanski Jnr.
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water. De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art...

19th Century Scottish landscape oil painting of Highland cattle at Glen Goil
By William Watson
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
William Watson Jnr British, (1847-1921) Up Glen Goil, West Highlands Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1892, further inscribed verso Image size: 23.5 inches x 35.5 inches Size including frame: 36.25 inches x 48.25 inches This highly atmospheric and well executed painting by William Watson Jnr depicts Highland Cattle watering at Glen Goil. Glen Goil is a valley area of Argyll and Bute in the West Highlands. It is situated at the junction of Hell’s Glen and Gleann Mor and has the river Goil flowing through. Located around 2 miles from Lochgoilhead, it is well known as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Watson made several trips to the Highlands and produced a number of paintings of the locality, many of which included highland cattle such as this fine example. Another painting by him of Glen Goil is held by the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s. As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. Perhaps to take advantage of the inspiring scenery, Watson moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire where in 1871 he met and married Eleanor Davies who was from Caernarvonshire. Four of their children Sidney Watson (1881-1931), Caroline Ellen Watson (1871-1947), William Robert Charles Watson (1873-1928) and Walter James Watson...
