Edmund Bristow
Edmund Bristow, Farmyard With White Mare, Oil Painting

c. 1850

About the Item

This fine mid-19th-century oil painting by British artist Edmund Bristow (1787-1876) depicts a farmhouse with a saddled white mare taking water while a cockerel looks on. An older man stands alongside, under the eaves of a thatched roof. Edmund Bristow was a distinguished painter of animals, still life and genre subjects. His rusticated portrayals of Victorian rural life served a baying aristocratic clientele, eager for his canny observations. Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) proclaimed that no one could paint a better horse - high praise indeed. Bristow’s popularity was in part due to his location - he was born in Eton and worked predominantly in Windsor. But also it reflected his precocious mastery of capturing the rustic environs of working families. Often he included animals, which carried expressions to communicate their personalities. Note the alertness of the cockerel versus the tired, somewhat forlorn, appearance of the horse. Bristow’s patrons included Royalty and several of his works are held in the Royal Collection. His career was effectively cut short when he withdrew from public life for fear of further patronage. Signed in the lower left and held within a splendid scroll and foliate frame, which is probably original. Provenance: Private collection, England. Artist’s auction maximum: £29,000

Robert Burrows (Circle), River Landscape With Cattle
By Robert Burrows
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This charming mid-19th-century English oil painting depicts a river landscape with cattle. It’s similar to works by Suffolk artist Robert Burrows (1810-1883). The son of a silversmith, Burrows spent the majority of his working life in the same trade while developing his artistic skills in his spare time. Possessed with a keen sense of the beautiful, his idyllic pastoral landscapes portray nature in a sentimental mood. His views were praised for their ‘effective’ and ‘natural’ state, married with a sense of harmony in composition and colouring. Indeed, there’s something akin to those by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788). In 1832, Burrows became a member of the Ipswich Society of Professional & Amateur Artists and is later cited as being its secretary. Other members included Samuel Read...

Robert William Arthur Rouse RBA, On The Stour, Kent
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Robert William Arthur Rouse RBA (1867-1951) depicts a picturesque view on the River Stour in Kent. Rouse was a skilled landscape painter, illustrator and etcher. Captivated by the enchanting verdancy of the English home counties, Rouse was a man of nature. Going to it, working predominantly outdoors, and describing its ever-changing moods with a poetic spirit. He enjoyed the freedom of the open air - simply pitching an easel on a damp riverbank, studying the elements, and painting. An approach which may seem obvious today, but during the late 19th century it was deemed as ‘modern’. In 1880, an art critic described Rouse as a member of “our modern landscape school” who “aim at the portrayal of simple transcripts of nature, judiciously selected, painted chiefly on the spot, with little regard to traditional rules of composition and chiaroscuro.” It’s tricky to decipher whether this is a compliment or otherwise. Other artists on this ‘modern’ list include Alfred de Breanski (1852-1928), David Bates (1840-1921), Joshua Anderson Hague...
