About the Item

Pair of paintings, still on the first canvas, oil on canvas measuring 70 x 82 cm without frame and 80 x 92 cm with coeval frame by the painter Felice Boselli (Piacenza 1650 - Parma 1732) depicting a still life with popular characters, animals and game. Felice Boselli was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, best known for still lifes of game. He was a painter active above all in Parma and in his hometown, where he studied and introduced himself into the world of painting under the guidance of Michelangelo Nuvolone, brother of the more famous Giuseppe. It was in that shop that he met Angelo Crivelli, (known as Crivellone), an animalist specializing in game, who significantly influenced his style together with the Cremonese school, the Bergamo school of Baschenis, Bartolomeo Bettera, and the Roman school of Michelangelo Cerquozzi, as well as that fiammninga. The other bases of his pictorial personality came from the study and observation of regional and local still lifes, from Parmigianino as regards the figurations, from Annibale Carracci's Butcher's for recurring themes and scenes. Thanks to his works, scattered a little everywhere in the homes of the nobles of Piacentino and Parma, he was given the opportunity to lead a comfortable life; the country and modest style and language was however the foundation of his works and his success. In his works a cat often appears, which seems to represent his name: feles (feline) = felix (happy). Yet Boselli did not exclusively paint domestic scenes. He was called by Alessandro Sanvitale, to decorate the Fontanellato theater, where he will work from 1681 to 1690, he was the painter of the Sanvitale counts in the early 1700s for over 10 years and in addition to the paintings of fish and bleeding meats, he also painted many portraits. The paintings and works of art published here are my exclusive property and therefore are always available to be viewed, by appointment, in my exhibition sites located in Sanremo and Brescia. Jacobus or Iacomo Victors (Amsterdam c. 1640 - 1705) Still life with birds Oil on canvas, 112 x 133 cm The still life examined here is a rare example of the simultaneous presence of live and dead animals in a single composition. On two rocky levels different ornithological species are neatly arranged, reproduced with the utmost fidelity and adherence to life. Mallards, doves, sparrows and a partridge placed on their backs can be recognized. The soft mantles with different chromatic tones, with the characteristic streaks and spots of color, together with the precise investigation of the various ornithological typologies, denote an observation of the real datum typical of the seventeenth-century Flemish tradition. Another mallard, this time alive, seems to have just settled on the rock, as if to observe the rich composition moving its neck. Its characteristic colors, the bright green of the head and the upper part of the neck, the yellow of the beak and the orange of the legs characterize the painting and capture the viewer's attention. The flight of the dove in the foreground is splendid, seen from above, the virtuosic pose and the brightness of its feathers, in an elegant modulation of grays tending to white, denote the stylistic quality of this work.
