Feng Yi Chen’s oil painting invites a return to the roots of Chinese literati painting, yet transcends its boundaries. His work focuses not on the precise details or outlines of objects, but on the expression of the artist's inner vision. In his paintings, cliffs and rocks float as light as fabric, while textiles themselves dissolve into fog, shaping the form of a goldfish. “Pictures in Poems, Poems in Pictures”—Feng Yi Chen aims to express the ultimate freedom of creation, going beyond mere representation to capture the essence of perception itself.
Instinct No. 13
The core of this series is an exploration of observation itself. Born from unconscious perception, these works combine a goldfish and a piece of black cloth, merging them into a singular, fluid expression. The fusion of these elements represents the artist’s quest to present the subjective or unconscious decision that shapes our perception. Whether resembling ink or cloth, the final interpretation is dictated by the viewer’s level of awareness. "The moment you observe something, you have already decided what you will see, even if the process feels completely natural and effortless."
Ship in tube
