Yookan Westfield Orange Cat's Thoughts, 2022 Oil on linen painting 24 × 24 × 2/5 inches This is a unique work Signed twice: Hand signed on the front; bears artist's handwritten label on the back This is a gorgeous cat painting by New York based Japanese artist Yookan Westfield, who is well known and beloved internationally for her exquisite paintings of cats. The present work was exhibited in the Summer of 2022 at the Prince Street Gallery In 2020, Yookan Westfield was chosen by art critic David Cohen, editor and publisher of Artcritical magazine as one of the winners of the "Pets of the Pandemic" art competition to benefit Best Friends Animal Society. This unique, oil on canvas is hand signed on the lower recto, and bears a label on the verso, handwritten and signed by the artist. For art collectors who are serious cat lovers, Yookan's cat paintings are a must-have. She already had an almost cult-like following in Japan, where she exhibited widely in galleries and museums, before she emigrated to the United States on a genius visa, accorded because of her extraordinary artistic talent. Westfield continues to exhibit regularly in New York and Japan. The present work, "Orange Cat's Thoughts", celebrating the artist's own cat name Orange (a big tomcat), who has served as the artists companion and muse throughout the pandemic. Here orange cat sits against the New York harbor. Westfield studied painting at the New York Studio School of Painting & Sculpture under the Dean of the School, renowned painter, Graham Nickson, and she received her MFA from Musashino Art University in Tokyo and her BFA Kanazawa Art University, Japan. This is a gorgeous painting that would look beautiful in any home. The cat-loving collector who acquires it will be delighted. About Yookan Westfield: Yookan Westfield was born in Nanao-City, Japan and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. She earned a BFA from Kanazawa Art University and an MFA from Musashino Art University in Tokyo. She graduated from the New York Studio School, 2007. Westfield received the Dokuritsu Prize in Dokuritsu Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, Japan in 1997 and 1998. A co-founder of the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, Thelma Appel is a representational and abstract painter who has been working and teaching for more than six decades. In 2019, she was subject of a 50-year career survey (October, 2019 -February 2020) at the Brattleboro Museum in Vermont, entitled Thelma Appel: Abstract/Observed curated by Mara Williams. She has also exhibited at the Mattatuck Museum in Connecticut, which acquired one of her fabric collages for their permanent collection. Thelma Appel was raised in Darjeeling, India and educated in London, England, at St. Martin's School of Art (now Central St. Martins) and Hornsey College of Art before emigrating to the United States in the 1960s. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues, including the Bennington Museum, the Berkshire Museum in North Adams, Mass., the Children's Museum of the Arts in New York City, the Mattatuck Museum, the Brattleboro Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts Gallery. In 1974 she was awarded a YADDO Fellowship, and in 1975, Thelma Appel, along with the painter Carol Haerer, co-founded the Bennington College Summer Painting Workshop, where many distinguished painters of the day, both abstract and representational, conducted master classes. Among them were Neil Welliver, John Button, Alice Neel, Larry Poons, Friedel Dzubas, Stanley Boxer, Elizabeth Murray and Doug Ohlson – a program that continued until 1980. She has also taught drawing at Parsons School of Design, painting at Southern Vermont College and at the University of Connecticut. Appel’s work has been presented at Art on Paper, Texas Contemporary, Market Art & Design in Bridgehampton and Art New York art fair, which selected Appel’s Times Square series of paintings for their invitational public Project Space sponsored by Absolut Vodka, and has been exhibited in both one-person and group shows at Alpha 137...
