Chris Plunkett’s “East Berkeley and Harrison Ave” is a 30 x 30 inch oil painting on cradled birch wood panel and is part of his “Red Sky” series. This monochromatic cityscape painting pairs a greyscale snapshot of Boston’s urban landscape with a bold red backdrop. The combination creates an environment that allows the viewer to imagine their own narrative within the expansive detail hidden within this high contrast painting. Its surface of thick textured paint strokes is protected with a gloss varnish which both illuminates and protects the vivid hues of red, white, black, and grey. The painting is frameless, but the sides of this piece have been stained and varnished in order to enhance the original wood-grain texture of the panel.
