Reminiscent of the Fauvist movement and Italian classicism, Italian artist Giuseppe Beddru’s bold outlines, dynamic brushstrokes and contrasting use of color make his work visually exciting. His work is extremely personal as well, drawing upon the Arab presence on the island where he grew up and his own Italian heritage. His paintings are indicative of self-discovery and emotional awareness, while also focusing on color, composition, and technical skill. This balance of visual dynamics and emotional response is essential to Beddru’s work.
Many of Beddru’s multi-media paintings include the visual motifs of classical Greek bas-relief sculpture, flattened within the confines of Plexiglas. Athletes and female portraits in profile are reminiscent of coins and popular classical imagery. After having admired and studied the works of the great masters, Beddru left Italy to continue his practice abroad.
This vibrant one-of-a-kind 22 inch square artwork is painted among many layers of Plexiglas panels. Beddru's pictorial subjects are represented through ink-based mixed media, applied via reverse painting techniques inspired by Italian painters from the seventeenth century. The eye of the observer is simultaneously caught by both a fascinating chromatic balance and the mystery of enigmatic figures who, from the depths of a mythological past, bring secretive symbols to our contemporary present as messages to decipher.

In several mystical traditions, there are common elements that are needed for spiritual metamorphosis and transitions to another, transcendent dimension. In Sufism, there is also an inner dimension to the law that has to do with repentance, the abasement of desire, and discipline of the self, or the elimination of the ego. Transparent figures emphasize the inner world of pure innocence which is the prototype human being, pure consciousness, one's true identity, to be contrasted with the material human who is bound by one's senses and materialism. Materialism is shown by also patterns in the paintings. The two different layers are against each other in a contradictory way. Robert Riggs was a gay man. Being gay in American during the 1940's time was something not to flaunt in public. Rigg's had to communicate his underlying feelings in more symbolic ways.
Throughout Riggs oeuvre, one sees continuous references to strong hunked out manly men and vulnerable boys. It is a core element of is iconography and is described in a powerful graphic style.
In “Prospector firing Rifle” is a Dick Pic. Riggs is clearly making a sexual statement about the moment of climax. The long, straight rifle explodes and is captured at the peak moment of climax. Meanwhile, the bag two bags of gold clearly resemble the other part of the male anatomy. Riggs was a thoughtful and meticulous visual thinker and nothing in any of Riggs’s compositions were haphazardly placed. Figurative Paintings for Sale
Figurative art, as opposed to abstract art, retains features from the observable world in its representational depictions of subject matter. Most commonly, figurative paintings reference and explore the human body, but they can also include landscapes, architecture, plants and animals — all portrayed with realism.
While the oldest figurative art dates back tens of thousands of years to cave wall paintings, figurative works made from observation became especially prominent in the early Renaissance. Artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance masters created naturalistic representations of their subjects.
Pablo Picasso is lauded for laying the foundation for modern figurative art in the 1920s. Although abstracted, this work held a strong connection to representing people and other subjects. Other famous figurative artists include Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Figurative art in the 20th century would span such diverse genres as Expressionism, Pop art and Surrealism.
