Adam Handler
Colorful, Faux-Naïf Painting by Adam Handler 'Summer Vacation Ghost'

2024

About the Item

'Summer Vacation Ghost' by Adam Handler, 2024. Oil stick and pencil on linen, 20 x 16 in. This painting by contemporary artist Adam Handler features a blushing ghost, accented by small dots of yellow, and a small home, depicted in his signature faux-naif, child-like style. The textured background is painted in pink. Adam Handler's work draws from a faux-naïf aesthetic, a style marked by its intentional simplicity and sincerity. Using oil sticks to produce bold lines, vibrant colors, and textured compositions, he achieves an almost childlike directness that belies the deeper, layered narratives of love and loss within each composition. Handler's recent Abduction series is a deeply personal reflection, exploring themes of love, family, and the longing for connections with those he has lost. Through whimsical scenes featuring ghostly figures, he invites viewers to connect with the delicate balance of lightheartedness and sorrow. Handler's vibrant female figures, inspired by the abstract forms of Willem de Kooning, embody his own playful, yet reflective perspective on memory and presence. These figures maintain a raw simplicity that speaks to childhood innocence, which captures the fragile beauty of connection and loss, blending personal memories with universal themes of love and family. Adam Handler, born in Queens, NY in 1986, studied Life Drawing in Italy and graduated from SUNY's Purchase College with a major in Art History in 2008. Handler has mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including New York, Europe, Africa, and Seoul, South Korea. His work has been shown extensively at major art fairs including Art New York, Art Market Hamptons, Art Context Miami, and the Armory Print Fair. Notable exhibitions include Madelyn Jordon Fine Art, Scarsdale, NY, Brega Artist Space, Seoul, Korea; Rarity Gallery, Mykonos, Greece; Janet Lehr Fine Art, Bridgehampton, NY; Concordia College: OSilas Gallery, Bronxville, NY; Maison 10, New York, NY; Fred Torres Gallery, NY; Vered Gallery, East Hampton, NY; and The Children's Museum of Westchester, Rye, NY.

By Hunt Slonem
Located in White Plains, NY
'Finches' by Hunt Slonem, 2022. Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 in. This painting features Slonem's signature finches in white, red, blue, and green on a white background. Considered one of the great colorists of his time, Slonem’s neo-expressionist paintings feature an exuberant and bold, fauvist palette to emphasize his beloved menagerie of animals. Through the application of lavish, lush colors, Slonem’s painterly style continues to be fresh and innovative bordering on Pop Art aesthetics. Depicting his signature motifs of repeating whimsical animal imagery, the artist’s devotion to nature and its inhabitants are apparent. Born in Kittery, Maine in 1951, Hunt Slonem graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Painting and Art History from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Slonem later attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, where he was exposed to influential artists from the New York area including Alex Katz, Alice Neel, Richard Estes, Jack Levine, Louise Nevelson and Al Held. This exposure played a pivotal role in Slonem’s artistic career, as it aided in his decision to move to New York in 1973.
