A member of the Section d’Or Cubists, André Lhote subscribed to the ‘return to order’ following the devastation of WWI. While some branded pre-war Cubism German or Gothic, its apparent disorder and lack of clarity symptomatic of a culture which the French blamed for the war, Lhote saw in the Cubism of Picasso and Braque a classicism which could in fact be seen as in line with the French tradition. In a letter to Jacques Rivière, Lhote wrote that the mistake of the Impressionists was in not knowing how to bring their work into this tradition, and indeed its importance for Lhote can be seen in his painting 14 juillet en Avignon (1930). The viewer need look no further than the subject matter, or indeed the painting’s title, for this to become clear; we are presented with the inhabitants of a provincial French town engaging in Bastille Day celebrations. The geometrical cut of the dresses of the two women in the foreground are not only in the style of Salon Cubism, but also suggest medieval chasubles, just one of the ways in which Lhote integrates the new style into the French historical patrimoine. The waving flags are suggestive of those in The Conquest of the Air by Roger de La Fresnaye, another member of the Section d’Or Cubists, who displayed work, alongside that of Lhote, at the celebrated 1912 exhibition. Like La Fresnaye, Lhote divides his composition by means of a scaffold of diagonals and perpendiculars, in Salon Cubist style. As in the work of the other members of this French branch of Cubism however such divisions, regulated by golden section dimensions, serve to order and contain rather than dissipate the scene. Lhote’s 14 juillet en Avignon (1930) is one of multiple, almost identically composed paintings by the artist of the same title. Lhote first painted the Bastille Day celebrations in 1923. This exceptionally large work was displayed at the Salon des Indépendants, to great acclaim, and is now owned by the Musée de Beaux Arts, Paris. The artist revisited the painting seven years later; the painting in question precedes another larger work also completed in 1930 which is currently on display at the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris. Lhote was a theoretician as well as a painter, contributing regularly in this capacity to the Nouvelle Revue Française, as well as teaching at his own art school, the Académie Montparnasse from 1922. Lhote believed that through the ‘cultivation of our intelligence’ we would be able to transcend the chaos of which the First World War was the result. Such cultivation would not result from abstract theorising, however, but the consideration of works and of the artist’s own work as it progresses. Perhaps it is for this reason that Lhote chose to revisit the 1923 painting, believing that seven years of work had endowed him with a ‘slightly higher point of view’ from which to consider the scene at Avignon.
