Anna Sobkowiak
'‘The Fortress' – colourful, landscape, acrylic painting

2015

About the Item

Anna Sobkowiak is a painter and 2D animator living and working in Poznan, Poland. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under the International Student Exchange Scholarship. She has exhibited in Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and the UK, for instance, in Starter Gallery and Leto Gallery. After studies she was associated with Poznan Nowa Gallery and was a laureate of the ‘Salted Candy 2010’ competition. Nowdays she also participates in online international art exhibitions, such as ‘Together/Somewhere’ organised by Visionary Projects and Art City Works. Since 2022 she has been a member of London Paint Club. Her incessant inspiration are great works of David Hockney, Edward Hopper and Claude Monet. What she finds mesmerizing in their works are the afirmation of life (Hockey), the intensity of the moment (Hopper) and vibrant colours (Monet). Her pictures depict mainly young people in highly ambiguous spaces and situations, which creates an atmosphere full of engagement, inner strength and passion. Out of the swampy water rises a rock, a heavily compacted structure, a dumping ground of rubbish and diversity. On top of it stands a house and a shelter. It is new, friendly but inaccessible, with small windows. It contrasts with an empty landscape with no sign of life. A flatly painted fortress versus the texturality and naturalism of its surroundings. No one would want to be in it for fear of impending misfortune. The individual elements do not fit together and create the impression of a collage. However, this new jigsaw puzzle has positive overtones. The house as temple, sign and force of life prevails and offers hope. Everything has a beginning in us, in how we have been brought up. Someone compared this painting to 'The Castle' by Franz Kafka. I do hope that there's something kafkaesque about it. Keywords: colourful, rock, house, fortress, shelter, danger, landscape, melancholic-emotional realism
